It seems like there has yet to be an indeed “great” video game movie. Why are nearly all video game movies bad or forgettable to some degree?

The reasons for this is something Erik Kain and Paul Tassi discuss on the Forbes Overworld podcast last week (starting at 37:08) which you can listen to here.
But if we could break it down briefly here, it would come down to three main reasons:
1) The video games being adapted don’t usually have the best stories in the first place
2) The video games with good stories don’t need to be movies
3) The best video game movies are literally about video games
